Film Study - Animation
English Stage 5
Rationale
There's a pressing need for educational resources that include the voices of Aboriginal Peoples and Survivors of the Stolen Generations. These perspectives are integral for a comprehensive and authentic understanding of Australia's history, and are crucial to respect for principles of self-determination and representation.
Kinchela Boys Home has therefore developed a series of Aboriginal-led Syllabus Packages and Lesson Plans to assist teachers in delivering nuanced and culturally-informed content across the History, English and Aboriginal Studies curricula, that seek to foster empathy, truth telling, healing and active reconciliation.
About this Resource
Covering Content and Outcomes EN5-8D and ACELY1749 of the English Stage 5 Syllabus, this resource asks students to watch "We Were Just Little Boys", an animated film narrated by KBH survivors and illustrated by Uncle Richard Campbell, #28, about the experiences of those who went through Kinchela Boys Home (KBH). Providing a 10-page activity booklet that prompts students to explain the ideas, literary representations and visual choices of the film, this resource is an invaluable opportunity for students to develop a culturally-informed understanding of Aboriginal Australian literature while further improving their multi-modal analysis.
The lesson plan contains:
