Rationale

There's a pressing need for educational resources that include the voices of Aboriginal Peoples and Survivors of the Stolen Generations. These perspectives are integral for a comprehensive and authentic understanding of Australia's history, and are crucial to respect for principles of self-determination and representation.

Kinchela Boys Home has therefore developed a series of Aboriginal-led Syllabus Packages and Lesson Plans to assist teachers in delivering nuanced and culturally-informed content across the History, English and Aboriginal Studies curricula, that seek to foster empathy, truth telling, healing and active reconciliation.

About this Resource

Covering Outcomes P1.2 and P3.2 of the Aboriginal Studies Stage 6 Syllabus, this resource asks students to extensively engage with and respond to “We Were Just Little Boys,” an animated film about the experiences of those who went through Kinchela Boys Home, narrated by KBH survivors and illustrated by Uncle Richard Campbell, #28. Providing a 12-page analysis booklet in which students are prompted to carefully consider the impact of invasion and colonisation as well as Government policies on the social justice, human rights, heritage and identity of Aboriginal Peoples, this resource cultivates students’ short answer and extended response skills while reflecting on key concepts and ideas in the Aboriginal Studies syllabus.
