History Stage 5
Rationale
There's a pressing need for educational resources that include the voices of Aboriginal Peoples and Survivors of the Stolen Generations. These perspectives are integral for a comprehensive and authentic understanding of Australia's history, and are crucial to respect for principles of self-determination and representation.
Kinchela Boys Home has therefore developed a series of Aboriginal-led Syllabus Packages and Lesson Plans to assist teachers in delivering nuanced and culturally-informed content across the History, English and Aboriginal Studies curricula, that seek to foster empathy, truth telling, healing and active reconciliation.
About this Resource
Covering Content and Outcomes HT5-2, HT5-3, HT5-6, HT5-8, HT5-9, HT5-10 and ACDSEH104 of the History Stage 5 Syllabus, this syllabus package examines government policies around the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children through the unique experiences of survivors of the Kinchela Boys Home. Exploring physical and personal evidence, including the memories and testimony of survivors, the package lessons demonstrate the effects of assimilation and protection policies on Aboriginal Peoples and their communities.
The syllabus package contains:
- 1 PDF for teachers, containing 9 detailed lesson plans with clear outcomes-based guidance and activities;
- 1 PDF for students, a 40 page in-depth activity booklet which situates primary source material from the Kinchela Boys Home alongside secondary historical scholarship on the Stolen Generations and historiographical debate about genocide, including a range of map, testimony and source-based analysis activities that help students to cultivate careful and culturally-informed historical inquiry.
- 1 multi-lesson PowerPoint presentation to support high-level analytical and respectful in-class discussion.
